Mr. Ray Micallef
MBA (Henley), ACII, RGN (Wrnt) MIM. Chartered Insurer
MMr. Micallef is a management, healthcare management and insurance professional with a career spanning thirty-five years in the healthcare sector, insurance management and financial services industry.
He is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and a Chartered Insurer. He holds a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from Henley Management College, UK, authoring his theses on “Word-of Mouth Marketing - The Key Elements for Growth in the Private Medical Insurance Sector”.
Mr. Micallef grew in the Health Industry, moving up to become a management consultant for a private hospital, Capua Palace Hospital Malta where he advised management in the design and implementation of theatre operations and ward management systems. In 1998 he joined BUPA Healthcare as Claims Manager where he restructured the claims department focusing on reduced costs and improvement in customer service systems. One of the key successes during this period was the introduction of anti-fraud processes which streamlined the claims processes whilst highlighting possible fraud indicators. These processes were also implemented in the subsequent management positions held later on.
In 2005 he joined Middlesea Insurance plc (a member of the Mapfre group) and moving upwards to Senior Executive Manager for the Underwriting and Administration department for group and Individual health and group life policies. Throughout his career he managed teams that almost doubled the income for both group life and group health insurance combined business. He was responsible for product design and marketing, and implementation of underwriting and claims policies and procedures in the health insurance department. One of the key successes during this period was the introduction of anti-fraud processes which streamlined the claims processes whilst highlighting possible fraud indicators. These processes were also implemented in the subsequent management positions held later on.
In 2013 he joined a newly established insurer to set the Health Insurance Department including all claims and underwriting systems, network providers, health insurance business development for Malta, Middle East and North Africa. Mr. Micallef’s experience as an insurance trainer spans over twelve years as a visiting lecturer at the one of the leading Insurance Training Centres in Malta, in Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Oman and Saudi Arabia and at the Malta Chamber of Commerce. He has developed and delivered several workshops for a diverse audience in medical insurance and provided tuition for CII subjects in (a) Private Medical Insurance, (b) Claims Management and Risk Management, (c) Economics, (d) Insurance Law, (e) Insurance Risk and Capital Management and (f) Fraud Detection and Avoidance in Financial Services.
He also lectures in (a) Information Systems in Business, (d) Economics, (c) Business Administration, (d) Customer Care Strategies, (e) Business Organisational Structures and (f) Business Operations and Processes.
Furthermore, Mr. Micallef also lectures in (a) Quantitative Methods and Research, (b) Marketing, (c) Contemporary Marketing Communication, (d) International Marketing Strategy and (e) Leading and Managing with Ethics and (f) Managing Excellences in Processes & Projects, in the B.A., M.B.A. and M.Sc. programmes at Global College, Smart City Malta for Global College, the University of Chester, NCC Education, the London School of Commerce and the University of Bedfordshire .
As part of his continued professional development, he participated in various workshops and seminars including Ethical Investment in a Dynamic Society (APS Bank, Malta), Raising Insurance Brokers’ Standards (Insurance Brokers Association), Medical Insurance in the Great Libyan Jamahiriya (Challenges and ways of success), Tripoli, Reinsurance in Action (CII), Business Performance Improvement (EMCS), Neuro-Linguistic Programming in Customer Care, Quality Assurance and Quality Control, and other various management development seminars (at University of Malta).
Mr. Micallef is currently delivering lectures for the Continuous Professional Development programmes for the Maltese Insurance Industry, as set out by the Malta Financial Services Authority. In order to maintain practical insight into developments in the healthcare industry, he maintains his professional warrant as a qualified registered nurse through voluntary practice at Malta’s national hospital.
